Haldimand OPP have taken the unusual step of issuing a curfew for young people to combat mischief.On the weekend, Haldimand police plucked three young people off the streets and took them home. In each case, the parents weren’t aware their children were out, police said in a news release.
In one incident, some young people were found under the Caledonia bridge breaking bottles. One youth was charged, while others fled the scene, sending text messages to their friends warning them not to come, say police.
Police believe word of their crackdown on mischief must have spread because their were only six mischief incidents reported over the weekend and most of them were minor. The exception was some graffiti spray painted on buildings in Dunnville. Most of the words and images were directed at police.
Under the Child and Family Services Act, police are able to take any child under 16 off the street if they are in a public place between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. and not accompanied by an adult. Police may take a child home or to a place of safety.

Day of Action - Dunnville rocks, OPP Two Tier Justice lives

Gary McHale asked me to join Haldimand resident Donna Pitcher on the bridge in Dunnville to cover her one-woman protest/plea that the OPP keep the bridge open should native protesters decide to block it as part of their National Day of Action. My job was to gather photo/video evidence of any native actions, and to gather evidence to be used against the OPP should they refuse to enforce the law, or decide to violate the rights of non-native protesters.
The natives stayed away, but the same can’t be said for the ham-fisted OPP. If it weren’t for them and their silly police state tactics the only story I’d be telling today would be about the awesome people of Dunnville(!) and the sunburn I got while admiring the scenery and wildlife from the middle of their bridge over the Grand River. Fortunately for us, the OPP - once again - just couldn’t resist harassing non-native, law-abiding, peaceful people as if we were the ones threatening Canada’s infrastructure.
The OPP drove by once and stopped to ask when Donna was leaving the bridge. Later, a couple of officers on foot came by for a couple of minutes and then left. At 1:30 they returned just as a small group of about 7 people were standing with us. They informed us that they had been “ordered to request that we leave the bridge.”

Warriors brace for police force
Expect ‘fallout’ if violence is used at a planned blockade.
Native warriors across the country plan to keep a close eye on tomorrow’s events near Deseronto in case police attempt forceful tactics to stop Mohawk blockade plans.
The political manoeuvring of Assembly of First Nations Chief Phil Fontaine and other band chiefs to distance themselves from blockades has left the Tyendinaga Mohawks seemingly alone in the runup to the proclaimed native day of action.
“They are not alone,” said one well-connected source outside Tyendinaga. “Warriors from across the country are keeping an eye on it.”
“If violence is used against the people at Tyendinaga or anywhere there is going to be fallout,” he said. “We would not think too highly of (police use of force),” said Rarahkwisere of the Akwesasne Warrior Society, adding it is up to the clan mothers to decide on a reaction. “In the event someone gets hurt, the politics of the AFN go out the window and the grassroots people come together,”
(EDIT: So if we don’t tolerate their terrorism, they will react with more terrorism, but if we do tolerate it, they will of course be emboldened even more and react with more terrorism)

Illegal actions on aboriginal day of action won’t help real issues: Martin
Staging illegal activities on Friday’s national aboriginal day of action would do nothing but “tarnish” the efforts of peaceful protesters hoping to further the case for improving the lives of aboriginal Canadians, former prime minister Paul Martin said Wednesday.
“I think it’s so important that this day not be marred by illegal activities and blockades,” he said. While most national and regional chiefs have called for peaceful demonstrations on Friday, there are concerns some communities may resort to illegal measures such as highway or railway blockades - acts that could spark confrontations with law enforcement.

Review unearths no artifacts on Wal-Mart site; Ministry approves land for development
A thorough archaeological investigation did not turn up any First Nations artifacts on the 17-acre Dunnville Shopping Centres property.“This is just confirming the original report findings,” said Scott Dutchak, development vice-president of Calloway Real Estate Investment Fund.
He told The Chronicle he was confident about the findings in the first archaeological study completed on the property two years ago. Two flakes of Albany chert, which is used for arrowheads, were found. The Ministry of Culture signed off on the site, approving it for development.
“We’ve been talking to Six Nations quite extensively about our development and we felt it was appropriate to do (a study) again,” said Dutchak.
In the background behind Dutchak, two smaller flags on a stick and several smaller flags were stuck in a mound of topsoil near the corner of Taylor Road and North Shore Drive. Dutchak said he did not know who put the flags up but did not have a problem with them. He had not heard that any Six Nations flags had been erected on the site.

Dunnville wants Wal-Mart; Company in positive talks with Six Nations
Someone planted a Canadian flag fastened to a long branch into the topsoil heaped on the Dunnville Shopping Centre property last week.The national emblem was driven home less than 48 hours after representatives of Calloway REIT concluded their first meeting with Six Nations. Calloway REIT is the owner of the property where a 90,000 square foot Wal-Mart is planned. Smart Centres is the company steering development of the project at the corner of Taylor Road and North Shore Drive.
When news that the property owner was asked to speak to Six Nations spread around town, people began to worry about losing Wal-Mart. Some were angry, others disappointed.
It’s upsetting, said Mayor Marie Trainer. In a recent telephone conversation with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada minister Jim Prentice, she told him it was time to start dealing with the criminals and radicals. The Mississaugas of the New Credit near Hagersville have a lot of land claims and they are peaceful, she said. Why not deal with those who are peaceful first, she continued.

Canada at the Crossroads: Rule of law or anarchy?
This is not an article I ever wanted to write, but Friday’s (May 31/07) release of the “shameful coverup” by the Ipperwash Inquiry, the announcement that the federal government wants to reward the Douglas Creek Estates criminals with a $125,000,000 payment to Six Nations, and today’s release of a frightening video [dial-up] of Mohawk Warrior terrorist Shawn Brant threatening Canada leaves me no choice.
Our country is at a very dangerous crossroads. One road leads to a nation ruled by laws where all citizens are equal; the other leads to a black hole where law-abiding citizens realize that the police and government will not protect them from native criminals, and are forced to take the law into their own hands in order to defend themselves.

Officials meet with Six Nations to discuss Wal-Mart plaza
An official with the company that owns the Wal-Mart property confirmed this week the project is back on track.
Scott Dutchak, of Calloway REIT also indicated that officials from his firm will be meeting with representatives of the Six Nations.
“We want to be good neighbours with Six Nations,” said Dutchak, in the wake of a meeting held Tuesday between representatives from Calloway REIT and members of the Six Nations Confederacy.

Wal-Mart land ownership disputed
A real estate investment firm’s conviction it has clear title to the Dunnville Wal-Mart property is being disputed by members of Six Nations.“We have clear title to the land so there is no issue from our point of view,” said Scott Dutchak of Calloway REIT. The company’s ownership is registered at the land registry office, he said.
At a May 23 community meeting in Ohsweken, Cayuga sub-chief Leroy Hill said the Six Nations Confederacy sent a letter to Wal-Mart. He said Calloway REIT will look at environmental concerns and told the Confederacy they will do what they want with the property.
At the Six Nations community meeting, Ruby Montour wondered if Wal-Mart construction will continue and if lands around it will be given to Six Nations. “We don’t have to let them build there,” she said.“Telling them is not working. Action does,” said Montour who asked if people wanted to accompany her to the construction site.

Thousands of acres in Moulton Township were the focus of interest for Six Nations Confederacy chiefs and community members at a May 23 public meeting in Ohsweken.
The block is one of six areas that Joseph Brant leased in the late 1700s to raise ongoing revenue for Six Nations. After two mortgagees failed to make payments, Six Nations chiefs asked the government of Upper Canada to return the land. It was not reverted.
On May 31, Canadian negotiators are expected to table offers on Moulton, the 25-acre Port Maitland claim and the Indian agent Samuel Jarvis claim which is about his misappropriation of Six Nations funds. The Burtch tract in Brant County and lands flooded for the Welland Canal may also be the subject of an offer this week.The negotiating table is also looking at the 250,000 acre Nichol Block at the northern tip of the Haldimand Tract. Canada will never have enough money to pay back Six Nations, said Monture.
Monture said the reclamation of land in Caledonia has put pressure on the government to take a more serious look at Six Nations claims. “Stay on DCE until all our land issues are resolved. “Remind the government we own the river,” said Cheyenne Williams. “If we take the bridges, closing off the reserve means nothing to us.“
