A Brantford developer who is developing land along Grand River Avenue in Brantford has been ordered to stop all development by Six Nations natives or face occupation of his land.
The order from Six Nations came on Thursday, August 23, 2007. The developer, who is developing houses in a residential area was ordered by Six Nations to stop the construction of all housing units.
On Friday, August 24, 6 members of Six Nations came to the site and told the developer that if he did not stop all building they would send 20 to 30 natives to occupy his land stating he had no right to do any development as the land did not belong to him. Six Nations claims it is their land.
He contacted the police and the government, but was told to wait until after the Confederacy meeting on Saturday to see what the outcome of that would be.

Another Native Occupation in Brantford
By Christine McHale
August 28, 2007
Another one bites the dust!
Yes folks, it’s happened again. This time in Brantford, go figure!
A developer in Brantford was contacted by Six Nations last Thursday and told he had to stop all development of a housing sub-division because the land he bought wasn’t his. It belongs to Six Nations. Sound familiar?
The developer of Mayberry Homes, Mike Quattrociocchi, says he did everything right, everything he was supposed to do. He bought the land, got the land title, got the building permits, then made the fatal mistake of thinking all was good for go and he was in the clear. Never mind the fact that by that time, even before any ground was broken, before any basement was poured, before he did anything else, he would have spent millions already.
Now, after being told to stop all development, he is frustrated. Now that’s an understatement.
And, as if that weren’t enough, last Friday, six natives paid him a visit and told him that if he didn’t stop all development they would get twenty to thirty more natives to come and occupy land he had legally purchased, and legally had received all necessary land title, deed, and building permits for. Lock, stock and barrel!
So who runs this province anyways? Not the spineless McGuinty government, a government that would fail to recognize leadership if it bit them in the you-know-what!
The police perhaps? Nope!
So far, not one single developer, not one single police force, not one single McGuinty government MPP has stood up for justice.
To be sure, the developers, and they are a growing number, have made noise, but to no avail. Development has been stopped in Caledonia, Dunnville, Hagersville, to name a few, and now in Brantford, again.
Spineless, leadership clueless governments have enabled radical natives to thwart development and progress. Any why not? They’ve been given the green light by the government to go ahead, bring economic terrorism to town after town. They’ve been told to go ahead, claim land parcel after land parcel, rightly or wrongly so, and you just never know, you may walk away with oodles and oodles of land and cash to boot.
One glimmer of hope though. October 10 is coming up fast. Why not dump the clueless, leadership challenged McGuinty Liberals. After all, you can’t get any worse form of government that one which doesn’t govern.

Legal battle begins; Firm files $100M suit over mine blockade
Kingston Whig-Standard
Frontenac Ventures Corporation filed a $100-million lawsuit yesterday against the local Algonquin nations and their leaders and are seeking an injunction to remove the protesters blockade from the entrance of a proposed uranium mining site north of sharbot lake.
Since June 29, members of the Ardoch and Shabot Obaadjiwan Algonquin Nations have been camped out at the entrance of Frontenac Ventures’ site, preventing the company from entering the land on which they have staked claims. Neal Smitheman, the company’s lawyer, said the Algonquins’ occupation of the land is illegal and “could result in serious economic harm for the company.”
The lawsuit - which charges the Algonquins with interference of economic rights, among other things - estimates that the occupation could cause the company $100 million in economic damages.

$1-billion in Negiotations: Netted no settlements
VICTORIA — An influential native leader is challenging the B.C. New Democratic Party to end its silence on a proposed land claims settlement on the eve of a critical vote.
If ratified, the Tsawwassen First Nation will have achieved only the second modern-day treaty in British Columbia, after the Nisga’a deal was signed almost a decade ago.
If the vote fails, it will be a major setback of the current treaty negotiation process, which has cost roughly $1-billion and netted no settlements to date.
The proposed treaty has divided B.C.’s New Democrats because it will, if approved by members of the Tsawwassen First Nation on Wednesday, allow development on protected farmland.

Petition: UBC Golf Course
To the Premier of British Columbia and the member for Point Grey the Honourable Gordon Campbell.
We the undersigned ask you and the Provincial Government to find an alternative method of compensating the Musqueam Indian Band regarding any entitlement they may have to the UBC golf Course. We believe that this golf course has been a vital recreation resource and an important part of the social fabric of Vancouver since 1929, particularly those of us who are lucky enough to live in Point Grey. Over the last seventy five years Vancouver has lost four key golf courses, Jericho, Hastings Park, Shaughnessy and Quilchena. Although Shaughnessy relocated to the Musqueam Land it will revert to the Musqueams in 2033 a short 26 years from now. With the recreational needs of seniors clearly on the increase in our community, it would be a terrible mistake to convert this precious resource into housing either for the private sector or the Musqueam Indian Band.

‘Ghetto dude’ gets apology from Premier
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty apologized Sunday to a young job applicant who received an e-mail from a cabinet staffer referring to him as a “ghetto dude.”
Evon Reid, who is one credit short of a political science degree from the University of Toronto, applied for a position as a media analyst with the Ontario government and last week e-mailed the cabinet office to follow up. Aileen Siu, an office worker, replied: “This is the ghetto dude that I spoke to before.”
Ms. Siu intended to forward the message to co-workers, but mistakenly sent the response to Mr. Reid, who is black.
Sunday, Mr. McGuinty phoned Mr. Reid and “apologized for the completely unacceptable incident … and he thanked Evon for having the courage to go public,” said Chris Morley, a spokesman for Mr. McGuinty.

Tories move towards one fishery
Black Press - Posted on BC: Maple Ridge News
Can the federal Conservative government plan to create one fishery in B.C. appease both commercial and aboriginal fishermen and finally bring peace to the fractious Fraser River?
“What we’re trying to do will increase First Nation participation in the commercial fishery,” Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl said Monday after announcing the plan in Vancouver with Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn.
And it will eventually replace the aboriginal fishing strategy, a program critics – including Prime Minister Stephen Harper – have called a race-based commercial fishery with a “shared fishery” based on one set of rules.

Uranium protesters win support; Algonquins blockade mine site with a little help from their friends
The smell of campfire and fresh coffee hangs low in the afternoon heat here at this abandoned tremolite mine where about a dozen Algonquins have been hunkered down in protest for the last two weeks.A small child rides his bicycle in the gravel, the sound of crunching rocks fading as he weaves between trailers and outhouses, while the grownups chat in the shade underneath a dark tent. A towering grey structure, used during the mine’s operational days, now bears the Algonquin’s red flag, as does the wire-mesh gate guarding the site. The words “No Surrender” hang over the gate on a wooden panel in neon-orange spray paint.
This land has been claimed. (Edit: OCCUPIED)
“We aren’t going anywhere,” says Doreen Davis, the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nations chief. “As Algonquins, we have a duty to protect the land. We have no choice.”
What the protesters want from Queen’s Park is a declared moratorium on mining. Asked how long they’d be willing to wait, Davis immediately says “forever.”

National day of protest grew from roots in Caledonia
The recent national day of protest passed without very much disruption of our comfortable lives here in Canada. The blockage of a few highways and a CN Rail line could have been repeated dozens of times, all across the country. We aboriginals of this land have certainly suffered enough injustice. The history books are full of examples, for those who will open them.
The reason so many of the protests were fairly peaceful may be because of Six Nations’ example in Caledonia.
When Janie Jamieson and Dawn Smith led their young group of Six Nations people to reclaim the former Douglas Creek Estates site in February 2006, they did not take weapons. They only took their knowledge of Six Nations history and the Haldimand Proclamation - and a whole lot of courage.
(Edit: What the??? What news has this guy been watching for the last 18 months? This story REEKS of appeasement minded journalism.. “look at me I’m aborignial friendly!!”)

Aboriginals plan march to protest proposed uranium mining in eastern Ont.
SHARBOT LAKE, Ont. (CP) - Aboriginal protesters occupying the site of a potential uranium mine in eastern Ontario are expecting hundreds to join their march Friday to voice growing concerns about exploration companies encroaching on traditional lands.
Members of the Shabot Obaadjiwan and Ardoch Algonquin First Nations aren’t just worried about the potential health and environmental hazards of uranium mining, said Paula Sherman, a spokeswoman for the group and co-chief of the Ardoch Algonquin.
The land lies about 80 kilometres north of Kingston, Ont., and is a mix of private and Crown land, part of which is the subject of negotiations between the Algonquins and the Ontario government.

Six Nations waits on $125M offer; Confederacy negotiators wait for answers on Moulton land transfer documents
Six Nations Confederacy negotiators are waiting for answers before they respond to a $125 million offer from the federal government on four unresolved land claims.Mohawk Chief Allen MacNaughton said Six Nations asked federal negotiators for details on the 200-year old Moulton Township land transfer and on whose authority it was completed.
Proof of Canada’s level of priority for land issues in Haldimand County, the $125 million offer is an action that has never been taken before, said Haldimand Brant MP Diane Finley. “Now we are waiting for a response from Six Nations,” she added.“We hope the hereditary chiefs will look seriously at the offer or at least have a give and take and have something resolved,” said Haldimand County Mayor Marie Trainer.
She noted that the offer was contingent upon ending the occupation of Caledonia’s Douglas Creek Estates. She hoped that requirement applied to all sites in the county.

B.C. First Nation plans picket on Trans-Canada Highway
LYTTON, B.C. (CP) - Travellers on the Trans-Canada Highway near Lytton might be facing some delays Tuesday as members of the Lytton First Nation mount an information picket.
The band is upset by the shutdown since late April of the Lytton ferry service because of a strike by highway-maintenance workers. The ferry across the Fraser River is the only link between the Lytton reserve and the town.
With the shutdown, they’re now forced to make a four-hour detour on logging road or illegally walk across an elevated railway bridge.
The band wants the government to declare the ferry an essential service.
The band says in a release it was never properly consulted to reflect the appropriate essential-service level for the ferry.
Last month, aboriginals blocked the Trans-Canada Highway and adjacent railway line east of Toronto as part of a national day of action.

Diane Finley: Haldimand a Priority
Simcoe, ON – Minister Diane Finley, M.P. Haldimand-Norfolk and Minister for Citizenship and Immigration Canada issued the following statement in response to the July 8th Press Conference held by Mayor Trainer and council of Haldimand County.
“I have heard the frustration from the town of Caledonia . As MP for the people of Haldimand - Norfolk I will certainly continue to meet with the county, as I’ve done in the past, to hear their concerns and present them in Ottawa.
The federal government has tabled an offer to Six Nations, worth $125 million and I continue to work with my cabinet colleagues including Minister Prentice, Minister for Indian and Northern Affairs to find a solution that works for all sides including the people of Caledonia .
Canada’s New Government is taking action to address specific claims like those in Caledonia by introducing a comprehensive package of reforms that proposes to revolutionize the claims resolution process in four ways:
o The creation of a fully independent Claims Tribunal through which impartial judges will resolve those claims where negotiations have met with failure;
o Setting aside 250 million dollars on an annual basis for the next ten years to be used to settle these claims and ensure financial accountability;
o Transform the Indian Specific Claims Commission into a neutral dispute resolution body relieved of its role as the government’s arbiter of claims, the Commission will be able to focus its efforts solely on mediation; and
o Develop practical measures to clear the backlog of relatively small claims and to increase the flexibility in handling of larger claims.
As MP for Haldimand Norfolk I am committed to helping find a safe and reasonable solution for Haldimand County , as soon as possible”.

Diane Finley: Promise Made Promise Broken
One advantage of having a web site with over 5000 stories posted is that you can point out when Politicians are lying.
Below is a copy of Diane Finley’s web site from last year. On her web site she made a promise to the People of Haldimand County which you will not find any where on her new web site. She promised the following:
“From here on in, I will be sending out updates such as this every week until this situation’s resolved, so that you can be kept as informed as possible. As you deserve to be.”
Of course Mrs. Finley only sent out one additional weekly update in the past year - Promise Made Promise Broken. We would fully agree with Mrs. Finley that the people ‘deserve’ to have their representative communicate with them.

Finley: No direct role in Caledonia
Citizenship and Immigration Minister Diane Finley will continue her efforts to help reach a settlement in the protracted Caledonia land dispute.
But she isn’t about to abandon her Ottawa post to become a full-time “federal government person on the ground” in Caledonia, as members of Haldimand County council suggested yesterday.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Finley said she’s been working closely with Haldimand Mayor Marie Trainer and the council since the beginning and will continue to represent their views in Ottawa.
“I’m hoping to do all I can, if anybody has other ideas, I’d like to hear them,” she said. (Edit: I do I do! Stop negotiating with terrorists and enforce the law)

Haldimand ignores elephants running amok in Caledonia
Today, Haldimand County Council issued a toughly worded news release calling on the federal government to accelerate the pace of land claims negotiations in Haldimand.
The only problem is that council got tough with the wrong party while advocating the wrong solution on behalf of the wrong people. While they did refer, in passing, to the OPP’s refusal/inability to to enforce the law, Council forgot to mention that it is Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government that ratified the theft of the Douglas Creek Estates by buying it under circumstances that any reasonable person would call extortion.
Council also failed to mention that the federal government has repeatedly said that the Douglas Creek Estates ‘claim’ is invalid, and that McGuinty’s Solicitor General has dismissed all complaints against Commissioner Fantino without even investigating them.

We aren’t all free
To gain some credibility back, Canada needs to either 1, start upholding the laws of the country or 2, start solving native issues with real, constructive solutions. Preferably both.
Take effect for what you will, but when all was said and done last weekend, two things were evident.
First, natives want Canadians to realize their plight and the only way they feel they can do it is by restricting freedoms. They want Canadians to react to their needs such as poverty, poor drinking water and land claims. And help them. But many aboriginals don’t want to abide by Canadian laws.
By the same token, most Canadians want to be free, wherever they go within our great nation. They don’t want to be blocked in, threatened, tormented, or taken advantage of for things they didn’t do, and have no power to help make better.

Trapped in the aboriginal narrative
All across the land, native leaders are beating the drums for tomorrow’s National Day of Action. The point of the protests, they claim, is to “educate” the rest of us about the terrible conditions endured by aboriginals. “Poverty among Canada’s first nations peoples rivals Third World conditions,” explains Phil Fontaine, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. “It’s this country’s dirty little secret.”
If so, it’s the worst-kept secret in the world. You’d have to be brain dead not to be aware of the poverty of the reserves, the awful housing, the bad water, the sickness, the suicides, the hopelessness. People have grown weary of this story because it never changes. Kashechewan and Davis Inlet and Pikangikum all blur together. Those poor children, they say. And then they change the channel.
Everyone is trapped in the narrative we’ve constructed to explain it. The Europeans arrived, wiped out most of the natives, stole their land and tried to stamp out their culture. All the dysfunction of aboriginal communities stems from the original sins of the conquerors. Only the restoration of their land and culture (plus more money) will restore their dignity and fortunes.
We now have a vast Indian industry of chiefs, government bureaucrats, lawyers, consultants and academics that is heavily invested in this narrative. Many of these people are well-meaning. They are also the chief obstacles to change, because their remedies make the problems worse.

Without giving him any reason or charges, he was taken away under some new law to a state that excels in torture. No one heard from him for several days. Once in a while, we heard static and beeps coming into our minds but nothing more.
Suddenly a telepathic message flashed telling us how he was tortured by a special squad. They were dressed in black with black hoods. They looked something like Darth Vader’s gang. They used all the old tactics like inserting large objects into his rectum which he expelled into their faces, knocking out one eye. They siced beasts on him to frighten, bite and anally rape him. These animals ended up trying to help him and even licked some of his wounds, which drove his tormenters nuts. They also tried to put a computer chip in his brain so they could track him. They were unsuccessful because his body rejected it. He did not have the necessary anti-rejection chemicals in his system. It fell on the floor and broke into a thousand pieces. Derogatory terms were constantly hurled at him, like “dirty red sand nigger and maggot”, “Wagon burner, “big papoose” and “chief”.
They squashed his testicles which bounced back like silly putty. “You’re part of the resistance”, they kept yelling at him in frustration. “They tried to behead me but saw the scar on my neck”, he said. They decided against this because they figured that the Third Dimension would come and sew it back on like they did before. That happened when he was beheaded as an 8-year old at the residential school run by the churches for the colonial government.

Native groups plan peaceful protests - for the most part
Brantford Expositor
Canada’s native leaders are walking a fine line as they plan for a national day of protest on June 29. They hope to be dramatic enough to draw attention to poverty on reserves, stalled land claims and other issues, yet most insist they aren’t thinking blockades or confrontation. “We don’t want to cause a major disruption in the lives of Canadians, but at the same time, we also want to make sure they understand that this is a crisis,”
Phil Fontaine, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said in an interview this week from Ottawa.Shawn Brant, a Mohawk protester from the Bay of Quinte First Nation who led a 30-hour rail blockade in April near Deseronto, Ont., said a group is planning an action within a “framework of economic disruption,” but were co-ordinating with other communities as to which infrastructure would be targeted.“We have our plans made, and it’s really just contingent on circumstances that come up within the course of the next seven or eight days …,” Brant said.“We’re not going to close a highway that’s already closed or a train line that’s already closed. If that’s done, then we’re going to adjust ourselves accordingly. We want to be the most effective that we can be,” Brant said. (Edit: How very peaceful)
