People in Ontario who want to file a complaint against police will be able to go to an independent civilian body instead of having to take their grievance to the local chief of police, Attorney General Michael Bryant said Tuesday. A public review of the current process by Patrick LeSage, the former chief justice of the Ontario Superior Court, found many people were put off by the prospect of lodging an official complaint about police to the local chief, Bryant said.
An independent police review director will screen complaints from the public, toss out those without merit and decide how to handle the rest. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association called the changes a step in the right direction, but said the legislation did not go far enough because police could still end up investigating complaints against themselves.
