Tempers Flare over Mohawk Protest

Tempers flared at the Lions Hall here Tuesday night as residents packed the room and spilled out the door to vent their frustrations over recent Mohawk protests. Karen Brown was one of many residents who used the meeting as a chance to express her frustration.

“There’s no laws for natives that seem to work,” Brown said. “If I were to put a fire in the middle of the road, and a bus in the middle of the road, I’d be hauled off none too gently to jail.”

(Mayor) Clark encouraged concerned residents to contact their provincial and federal members of parliament, which earned laughter and jeers about their lack of effectiveness.

Most residents are just concerned about their ability to walk down the street, said one man. “If someone shoves you on the street, you can’t defend yourself with a petition,”
